The Best Time to Have Plastic Surgery: A Seasonal Guide for Optimal Results
As a board-certified plastic surgeon here in Austin, one of the most common questions my patients ask is, “When is the best time to have plastic surgery?”
The truth is, timing plays a huge role in your final results, your comfort during recovery, and how confident you feel when you step out to show off those results. Whether you’re considering a mommy makeover, tummy tuck, breast augmentation, or a facial rejuvenation procedure, planning your surgery around the seasons can help you optimize your outcome.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the best times of year to schedule different procedures, how to plan around important events, and why seasonal timing matters more than you might think.
Why Timing Matters in Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery isn’t just about the procedure itself — recovery plays a crucial role in how your results turn out. Swelling, bruising, and scarring all evolve over weeks to months, and certain times of year are simply better for your comfort and privacy.
Here’s why timing is key:
- Weather matters: Cooler temperatures mean you can wear layers to comfortably hide compression garments, bandages, and swelling. Here in Texas when it's 110 degrees and you're wearing a faja and bra after your mommy makeover it will get a little "moist". Sorry for those of y'all that don't like that word. But make sure you got your AC system working in tip top shape.
- Sun exposure: The Texas sun can darken scars. Planning your surgery during lower UV months protects your skin and incision sites. Critical for facial procedures such as facelift, necklift, blepharoplasty, and also body procedures such as arm and thigh lifts.
- Event planning: Many patients schedule procedures before weddings, reunions, vacations, or milestone birthdays. You’ll need enough recovery time to look and feel your best.
- Lifestyle and activity levels: Some seasons naturally fit better with downtime, especially if you enjoy outdoor sports or activities.
Fall & Winter: The Ideal Seasons for Major Surgeries
If you’re planning a body contouring procedure like a mommy makeover, tummy tuck, breast reduction, fall and winter are the absolute best times to schedule your surgery.
Here’s why:
- Cool weather = more comfort. Wearing compression garments under sweaters or coats feels natural, and you’ll be less likely to overheat during recovery.
- Holiday downtime. Many people take time off around Thanksgiving or the winter holidays, which can double as recovery time. So you're nosy co workers won't suspect a thing.
- Swimsuit-ready by summer. Scheduling a tummy tuck or breast augmentation in November means you’ll be fully healed and confident by pool season.
As far as non surgical options the winter is the best time to reverse skin damage accumulated during the spring and summer. This is absolutely the best time for laser resurfacing, intense pulse light, peels , etc.
- Example Timeline
- If you want to feel confident for a June beach vacation, aim to have your surgery between October and January. This allows 4–6 months for swelling to resolve and scars to be well on the way to fading.
BUT......
Most Plastic Surgery practices are busiest during this time so if you're looking for a discount don't expect to be offered one during the end of year busy season.
Spring: The Season for Facial Rejuvenation
As the weather warms up, many of my patients start thinking about facial procedures. They also are thinking about body procedures but if you're planning to be showing off your body in spring and of course summer there might not be a full season to enjoy as you would still be swollen.
If you’re considering a mini facelift or full facelift, eyelid surgery, or brow lift , spring is an ideal time. Facial surgeries don't take as long a major body contouring procedures to feel great.
- Why spring works well:
- You can recover before the busy summer months when social calendars fill up.
- Mild weather makes it easy to limit sun exposure while your face heals.
- Allergies and swelling are easier to manage in moderate temperatures.
Summer: Non-Surgical Treatments for Quick Results
Summer in Austin is all about being outdoors — but it’s not always the best time for major surgery. Instead, I often recommend non-surgical treatments and smaller surgeries during these months for immediate impact with minimal downtime.
Top treatments for summer include:
- Neuromodulators (Botox/Dysport), dermal fillers (Restlyane/Juvederm), biostimulatory fillers (Sculptra)
- Laser treatments, microneedling, for skin t exture and tone improvement. Many would would disagree here, and yes sun exposure is not good after laser, but with the right settings and post operative regimen we can perform laser safely and with good results. CO2 Lift Carboxytherapy facials to heal and hydrate your skin after sun exposure.
These treatments are perfect if you want to look great for a wedding, reunion, or last-minute vacation — without weeks of recovery.
What about surgeries in the Summer?
Well our awesome teachers are frequently needing to have procedures during summer break and you will find many practices offering discounts to support our teachers.
While all procedures can certainly be performed year round. Many patients will have smaller quicker recovery procedures during summer such as: Breast augmentation, Upper lid blepharoplasty, fat grafting, or liposuction.
Planning Around Life Events
Many of my patients schedule surgery with a specific event in mind, like:
- Weddings: Brides, grooms, or parents of the couple often want procedures done 6–12 months before the big day.
- Vacations: If you want to look and feel amazing for a beach trip, allow at least 4 months of healing time.
- Major milestones: Birthdays, reunions, and anniversaries are great motivators to plan ahead.
The key is to work backward from your event date. During your consultation, we’ll create a timeline that ensures you’re fully healed and confident by the time the event arrives.
Recovery Timeline Cheat Sheet
Here’s a general overview of how much downtime to expect for popular procedures:
Procedure Initial Downtime Full Recovery
Breast Augmentation 5–7 days 6–8 weeks
Tummy Tuck 2 weeks 3–6 months
Mommy Makeover 2–3 weeks 4–6 months
Facelift 7–10 days 3–4 months
Botox/Fillers None Immediate
CO2 Laser 5-10 days 6 weeks
These are averages. Every patient heals at their own pace, and I’ll give you a personalized recovery plan during your consultation.
Putting It All Together
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of when to have plastic surgery. The right time depends on your goals, lifestyle, and personal timeline.
That said, fall and winter are generally best for major body surgeries, spring is perfect for facial rejuvenation, and summer is great for non-surgical touch-ups or small surgeries.
